Within moments of going live, the Takashi Murakami x MLB Tokyo Series collection presented by Fanatics and Complex proved incredibly popular.
Almost 100,000 fans downloaded the Fanatics App in the lead-up to the drop, with thousands specifically signing up to be notified of Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs jerseys. Some pieces were gone within minutes, while a lot of the broader collection sold out within an hour of availability.
The Topps trading cards box set sold out within seven minutes, while the Ohtani Kanji Jersey, Flower Keychain, Dodgers & Cubs Tote Bags, and Dodgers & Cubs Victucs Bats sold out within an hour. Some fans lined up for the Complex and Fanatics LA Pop-up up to 24 hours before opening, with the line reaching as many as 4,000 people at its peak.
The merch was made in commemoration of the two-game 2025 MLB Tokyo Series featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs. Murakami’s distinctive style was brought to multiple pieces in the collection, including t-shirts, hoodies, jerseys, and hats. Also featured in the collection were the aforementioned Topps trading cards, New Era 59FIFTYs, Rawlings gloves and balls, and Victus bats.
“I feel lucky to be able to work alongside Fanatics, Complex and MLB and highlight Shohei Ohtani, an outstanding athlete who has emerged from Japan and made a name for himself on the global stage,” Murakami said of the collection. “This is something I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be a part of.”
The collection will still be available in the Complex and Fanatics LA Pop-up, which runs until Sunday, March 7, and the Shibuya pop-up from March 8 through March 21. Learn more about the Shibuya pop-up here.
Many of the pieces have already proved incredibly popular on the resale market, including the Topps set, which is going for over $400 on StockX. The Nike x Murakami x MLB World Tour Tokyo Series Dodgers jersey for Ohtani is also selling for as much as double its asking price.
