No, Kanye West isn’t going to be Maison Margiela’s next creative director.
The Donda rapper let fans know as much on Instagram. On Monday, Jan. 20, he took to the platform to post a screenshot of a Reddit user discussing rumors of Ye being the design house’s next creative director.
“Personally, I think it would be great as long as he continues doing everything he’s doing at Yeezy,” the Reddit user wrote. “I don’t really believe that [the rumor is] even true or that he would agree to do it considering how committed to Yeezy he is right now. Would love to see a collab between the two brands even though he doesn’t ‘do collabs.’”
West doubled down on the user quoting him, captioning the screenshot, “I DON’T COLLAB.”
Kanye has worked with several notable fashion brands in the past—including Adidas, Gap, Louis Vuitton, and Nike—so it’s unclear what he considers a collaboration versus a partnership. It kind of seems like an issue of semantics.
Maison Margiela’s creative director, John Galliano, resigned in Dec. 2024 after serving 10 years in the role. The company hasn’t yet hired a replacement. Galliano issued a statement on IG last month, writing that he was “forever grateful for this safe space to create and build a new family that supports me with courage and dignity”.
He added that he felt “gratitude to my fashion family for this life-saving creative moment and the safe place we have built together.”
As the Reddit user noted, Ye is all-in on YZY. Earlier this month, he released $20 Yeezy SL-01 Slippers and teased the upcoming Yeezy BL-01 Sneaker. He also claimed that his brand made $2.3 million in a day.
