Frequently asked questions
Is hair perfume good for your hair?
Hair perfumes are often blended with ingredients that can help shield hair from the elements, and tame can tame and smooth frizz and flyaways. “Especially in cold, dry weather, hair perfume is a fantastic way to add a boost of protection,” says Linda G. Levy, president of The Fragrance Foundation.
According to Rogerio Cavalcante, a NYC-based hairstylist and owner of The Second Floor Salon, a hair perfume is great for someone who wants fresh-smelling hair without overwashing. “It’s great for styled hair or in between wash days, and can be especially helpful for people who already use leave-ins or treatments regularly,” he says.
What’s the difference between a hair perfume and a regular perfume?
They’re not the same, say experts. “Hair perfumes are formulated to give hair a double dose of fragrance and nourishment. They may or may not contain alcohol, but come with a lot of benefits from moisturizing to nourishing your strands with ingredients such as vitamins or oils,” says Levy. They are often lighter and airier than your typical eau de parfum or eau de toilette. Regular perfume often contains alcohols and other agents that might dry out hair and make it crunchy, which is why it’s better to opt for a product designed specifically for strands
Tips for applying hair perfume
Spray hair perfume lightly on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair, avoiding the scalp, says Cavalcante. “I like applying it after hair is moisturized—either following a leave-in or on days when you’ve used a hydrating mask,” he says. As for how often you can apply one, Levy recommends using it in the morning before you start your day and reapplying as needed throughout the day. “Depending on the formulation or its features, see how your hair adapts or absorbs the product, especially if the formulation contains more oils,” she adds.
We tested hair perfumes by evaluating their ingredients, how moisturizing they made our hair feel, and how long they lasted. The ones we included on this list contained moisturizing oils that kept our hair looking strong and shiny for hours, and moisturized dry strands to help mitigate frizz. The best ones also lasted for hours, through long workdays and events.
