Nike has now been giving young patients of the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital the opportunity to design their own sneakers for over 20 years. The partnership continues this winter with today’s unveiling of the Doernbecher Freestyle 21 collection

This upcoming collection includes special iterations of the Air Jordan 17, V2K Run, Vomero Plus, Air Force 1 Low, Air Max Dn8, and Air Max Plus designed by Zach Rumbaugh, Khovny Vignery, Molly Bell, Oli Fasone-Lancaster, Raegan Scheid, and Sergio Cano Marquez, respectively. Additionally, the collection will include two apparel pieces that feature elements from each of the kids’ designs: a t-shirt in both men’s and kids’ sizing, and a cardigan.

The Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 21 collection will first be available tonight, October 17, via auction in Portland, followed by a global launch this winter on SNKRS and at select retail locations. Check out a closer look at the sneakers below.

Designer: Zach Rumbaugh

Zach Rumbaugh’s hobbies include fixing bikes and mechanics, which he honors on his Air Jordan 17. It features bolts on the eyelets and chrome elements inspired by Michael Jordan’s motorcycle. The number 38, seen on the hangtag and heel, represents the 38 days he spent in the hospital recovering from sudden cardiac arrest.

Designer: Khovny Vignery

Khovny Vignery, who is named after the doctors who saved her life as a baby, loves drawing, dancing, and snakes—so much that she even decided to put one on her shoe. Her V2K Run also includes a detachable friendship bracelet in honor of her brother Ryan, who had the same rare condition.

Designer: Molly Bell

Molly Bell has an appreciation for nature. Her Nike Vomero Plus is inspired by the outdoors, featuring a camas flower, lenticular forest print, and fawn hoof. As an autism advocate, she included a quote from her favorite author, Robin Wall Kimmerer, that reads “The most important thing each of us can know is our unique gift and how to use it in the world.”

Designer: Oli Fasone-Lancaster

Oli Fasone-Lancaster’s Air Force 1 is food-inspired, and features a garden of vegetables on the insole, a laser-etched outsole, and olive branches embossed on the Swoosh. A miniature set of utensils for snacking is also included. A rainbow graces the outsole, serving as a beacon of optimism.

Designer: Raegan Scheid

Not even open-heart surgery can keep Raegan Scheid from her passion for softball. That love is honored on the upper of her Air Max Dn8 through reflective sport graphics, while softball stitching is featured on the Air bubbles. Waves splashing across the midsole represent her happy place: the beach.

Designer: Sergio Cano Marquez

Sergio Cano Marquez has a unique look as a result of his rare genetic disease. He’s embraced being different, and wants his sneakers to represent others who feel the same. His Air Max Plus design is mismatched: the black shoe is for video games and drawing, while the white shoe features monster lizards at a pizza party against a vibrant New York skyline.
