When choosing which monitors to recommend, there’s a number of factors to take into consideration. These were the ones that we noticed kept coming up throughout our review process.
Weight: When it comes to portability, this is obviously a big one. Between one and two pounds is ideal for monitor portability, but it just depends on how much screen size you’re willing to compromise.
Screen size: How big of a screen do you want? 14 inches is a good place to be. 16 if you want the extra real estate.
Screen Resolution: The more pixels, the better. Although a 1080p HD resolution is good enough for most portable productivity monitors.
Refresh rate: Aka how often does the image refresh every second. The higher the number, the smoother it is. Most of these top out at a reasonable 60 Hz, but for gaming you’l benefit from more.
Eye comfort: Make sure to look into what kind of eye comfort settings a monitor has. How much blue light reduction is there? That sorta thing.
Display type: LED, OLED, IPS. These are not diseases, they are different types of LCD displays. Find the one that’s right for your usages and price range.
Ports: Do you need a monitor to hook up to your computer via USB-C or some other connection? This is important to know before making a purchasing decision.
Kickstand or case: Does it come with a kickstand/cover sleeve/case? If so, is it good enough that you won’t have to buy a replacement one immediately anyway? Factor that into your budget.
Price: Finally, know what a portable monitor is worth to you. You can get one for under $200, or spend well over twice that.
