Everyone’s dialing up their fitness routine, but what about recovery? In the past decade, massage guns have become the go-to tool for getting your muscles back into working order after particularly grueling workouts, and one model in particular has stood above the rest: Theragun. Produced by Therabody, the Theragun (available in various shapes, sizes, and speeds) has done its duty, turning sore muscles into jelly, getting athletes back into working order quicker than ever before.

The most advanced Theragun available is the Theragun Pro Plus. Boasting the same ergonomic design users have come to love and adds a host of additional features—among them heating, cooling, and red light therapy—the enduring question remains: Is it worth the $650 price tag? After giving our bodies a beating with this thing, we found out.

Theragun Pro Plus

Black and blue that won’t give you black and blues

The Theragun Pro Plus comes in all-black with blue accents and features the same triangular design as previous Theragun models. This configuration is unique to Theragun and offers the user multiple grip options, making it that much easier to massage hard-to-reach muscle groups. The Pro Plus also has a built-in display screen and a four-button control panel that make it easy to cycle through guided workouts, adjust settings, or opt for the quick start mode. Once an option is chosen, the screen lets you toggle the red light on or off and adjust the massage gun’s power.

In terms of its ability to leverage and combine multiple recovery therapies (five to be exact), the Theragun Pro Plus is arguably the most advanced massage gun on the market right now. Deep muscle percussive therapy is the option most wholly associated with massage guns and the Pro Plus offers four base percussive therapy attachments. These offer about 16mm of amplitude (how far the massage gun moves per stroke) and between 1750 and 2400 percussions per minute (how fast the strokes are completed), which can be adjusted via the display screen. The base attachments range from the standard ball (good for full-body massage) to more targeted tools like the wedge (shoulder blades/IT band) and the thumb (lower back trigger points). For when standard drool-inducing massage implements aren’t enough, the Pro Plus also includes a heated percussive attachment. Soft enough for full-body coverage, it has three heat settings (113° Fahrenheit, 122° Fahrenheit, 131° Fahrenheit) that you control via the display screen. The gun seamlessly recognizes the heat attachment, and changing attachments is easy: Just line up the markings, push in, and twist. Now, if you want to engage in contrast therapy without going full cold plunge, the Pro Plus offers a cold-therapy attachment to complement the heat. It’s sold separately, but allows the massage gun to deliver targeted cold therapy at temperatures ranging from 41° to 59° Fahrenheit.

Finally, there’s the vibration attachment. Vibration therapy is kind of like percussive therapy’s chilled-out stoner cousin. It fires at the same speed but with a lower amplitude, thus creating consistent yet far less intense muscular relief. This is perfect for more sensitive areas or those days when you are debilitatingly sore. All of these attachments are complemented by an infrared LED light panel situated directly below the attachment point on the Pro Plus. Red light therapy has been all the rage lately, and studies show that it can help your muscles heal on a cellular level. The light panel in the Pro Plus was designed to remain compact while delivering optimal red light therapy.
