Stephen Curry and Under Armour abruptly ended their 12-year-long partnership earlier this month, but new reporting implied that Under Armour failing to sign Caitlin Clark to Curry Brand could have played a role in that decision. It turns out, however, that was not the case.
“The story is unfortunate and untrue. Both parties have rejected the premise that Caitlin Clark was a contributing factor to the separation,” an Under Armour spokesperson tells Complex.
According to reports from Sports Business Journal and Bloomberg News, frustration mounted from Curry and his representatives after what they viewed as an “underinvestment” from the Baltimore-based sportswear brand. Adding to the displeasure, Curry reportedly wanted the brand to sign WNBA star Caitlin Clark to his Curry Brand, but Under Armour’s offer “trailed the total offer of Nike’s pitch,” which led Clark to ultimately land with the Swoosh.
Curry first signed with Under Armour in 2013 and in 2015, the duo inked an extension that would keep the Golden State Warriors point guard at the brand until 2024. In 2020, Under Armour launched the Curry Brand, which was a sub-label for the sportswear brand. Curry then signed a long-term extension in 2023 that was set to last into retirement. On Nov. 13, however, both Curry and Under Armour announced their split, with Curry retaining full ownership of his namesake brand and his “Splash” logo.
