Devin Booker officially unveiled his second signature shoe for the first time in front of a group of media on Monday at Nike’s Blue Ribbon Studio in its Oregon world headquarters.
Booker was joined by Nike senior footwear designer Ben Nethongkome to break down the new Book 2 ahead of the model’s on-court debut tonight when Book and his Phoenix Suns squad face off against the Portland Trail Blazers. At the preview, the duo shared details about the model, from the sneaker’s design process to the model’s inspiration, as well as revealing the two leading Suns-inspired styles, including an all-orange “Phoenix” iteration and a black-based “Rising” makeup.
Nethongkome, who has also designed signature sneakers for Ja Morant, Sabrina Ionescu, A’ja Wilson, and others, shared that the concept of restomod from Book 1 was also applied to Book’s second signature shoe. One of the archival models that influenced the Book 2’s design is the Spiridon, as seen on the upper. While the tooling is inspired by the Air Force 1, the midsole uses the brand’s Cushlon 3.0 foam and is paired with a Zoom Air unit at the forefoot. The outsole features an updated traction pattern that resembles the sun, while cactus needles replace the stars at the forefoot.
“I wanted to pay homage to the Phoenix colorway and start with orange involved in both of them like how I did on the first one,” Booker said. “I felt like overall we got away from that with all the colorways you can wear on the court now, so to pay homage to Phoenix and give my Suns fans that so they can rock to each game.”
The Book 2 rollout also includes an apparel range, consisting of long-sleeve T-shirts nodding to Booker’s Cane Corso mastiff, Haven, a woven jacket, game pants, and hoodies.
The Nike Book 2 releases in January at Nike.com and at select Nike Basketball stockists.
