For over four decades, David LaChapelle’s video direction and photography have been staples in the music world. And now, fans will soon be able to get up close and personal with his work.
On Monday, September 15, VISU Contemporary announced Vanishing Act, a new exhibition featuring works by LaChapelle. Vanishing Act will bring together over 30 works spanning LaChapelle’s career, including the world premiere of nine new pieces to be unveiled exclusively in Miami.
“For a young gallery in Miami Beach to be presenting new, world-premiere works by David LaChapelle is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Bruce Halpryn, owner and curator of VISU Contemporary, in a statement. “Our mission has always been to showcase cutting-edge, thought-provoking art that resonates with today’s cultural pulse. To be one of two galleries representing LaChapelle’s work in the Americas is a tremendous honor, and speaks to Miami’s growing stature as an art world capital.”
Among the works on display will be Will the World End in Fire, Will the World End in Ice (2025), which explores “tension between nature and civilization through meticulously staged still-life photography.” Another one is LaChapelle’s ongoing series Negative Currency (1990-2025), which turns global currency into negative icons, showcasing the contrast between value and image. Updates to this series include currencies from Cuba, Venezuela, and North Korea.
Over the course of LaChapelle’s illustrious career, he photographed and directed videos for Tupac, Britney Spears, Missy Elliott, Lil Kim, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Eminem, and more. Through his work, he has become one of the most prolific directors in the music world.
Vanishing Act will run from Nov. 29, 2025, through Jan. 31, 2026. VISU Contemporary will host a free and public grand opening celebration on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., with LaChapelle in attendance.
